BET Awards Recognises Busta Rhymes

This past weekend, the BET Awards took place celebrating black talent in music, TV, film, and sports. With amazing names in the US, this year, the awards were interspersed with Black British talents making headway in the categories, and even taking first place. Talents such as Daniel Kaluuya, Central Cee, Stormzy, and newcomers FLO were nominated and recognised as bringing great contributions to their artistry. The excellence from Britain was also recognised as Damson Idris, actor in ‘Swarm’ and ‘Snowfall’, won the category for ‘Best Actor’.

This year’s BET Awards honoured MC legend Busta Rhymes as the recipient of the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. Giving thanks to his children and his community, the ‘Break Ya Neck’ rapper spoke of his hustle to spearheading the “feature” on a song and his admiration for the next generation of rappers including Kendrick Lamar and CoiLeray.

Busta Rhymes’ win this year also sheds light on the contributions from the Caribbean where he recognised his Jamaican heritage as well as the cultures allowing him to be where he is today. From sound system culture developing into today’s MCs, dancehall culture, and the Jamaican-born founding father of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc. Celebrating 50 years of hip-hop, as well as 75 years since Windrush, the Caribbean culture was seen in full force at this year’s BET Awards.

Happy International Reggae Day

This past weekend celebrated International Reggae Day where artists of this genre are remembered for their impact on the culture. This year’s theme brought light onto old school artists under the theme ‘Saluting the Global Influence of the 80s and 90s Dancehall – From Bruckins to Bogle’, referring to the traditional dance in Jamaica (Bruckins) and the Dancehall move created by ‘Bogle’, the famed dancer in Dancehall.

This theme recognises the worldly talents of artists such as Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Tanya Stephens, and the late Sugar Minott, regarded as one of the pioneers of the Reggae genre. Seen as a golden age of reggae, the 80s and 90s have provided many great artists that have led to the genre’s worldwide popularity today. International Reggae Day seeks to recognise these names and their roles in the Reggae community, as well as ensuring that their legacy is maintained amongst the new generations of Reggae artists.

Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, also expressed his celebration for the day on Twitter and encouraged all who may celebrate to ‘use Reggae music to spread peace, love, and unity around the globe’.

Happy International Reggae Day!
